Her Business: Pinoy Baby Store

The Idea: When I was pregnant, my doctor put me on bed rest for a month. During that time, I was thinking to myself that it would be so convenient for pregnant women if baby things could be purchased from the comfort of their homes rather than at the mall. That’s when I first thought of putting up an online baby store.

Why it’s unique: The Pinoy Baby Store is an online store that sells modern cloth diapers and other natural parenting products. It has the widest range of modern cloth diapers in the Philippines. The Pinoy Baby Store is not just a business for me; it’s also an advocacy for some of the values I believe in, such as ecological mindfulness and natural parenting.

The Beginning: I had watched my mother exclusively cloth-diaper my younger brother twenty years ago, and when I got pregnant, I planned to cloth-diaper my son too. However, when I went to the department store to buy cloth-diapering accessories, I couldn’t find any high-quality diaper covers. I looked for diaper covers online, and in the process, I discovered how modern cloth diapers were revolutionizing the diaper industry in developed countries. I decided then that high-quality modern cloth diapers should be made available to Filipinos as well.

On balancing work time with family time: I’m a college instructor. While my son is little, I’ve scaled back my hours and am just teaching part-time. I’m very fortunate because the nature of both my profession and my business allows me to be with my son almost all day. I run the Pinoy Baby Store from home, so even when I’m working on the website or processing orders, my son is never more than fifty meters away from me. My husband’s support is also invaluable; he is the sounding board for many of my ideas and he gives me crucial business advice.

Why she loves being a mom: I have the honor of sharing in my son’s first moments of discovery.

Advice for other mom-preneurs: Follow your passion, but do the math too. Support from your family is vital.
