Located at BF Homes Las Pinas, Southville International School and Colleges offers an after-school math tutorial program using a traditional yet innovative tool, the abacus. The Abacus Mental Math Program uses the abacus as a basic instrument. Students are trained to master the movements of the beads and eventually learn to understand the abstraction through beads visualization. Upon mastering the abacus, students can calculate mentally without the device.

The Uniqueness of the Abacus Mental Math Program
It's amazing how children can readily give the correct answer after being given a series of 3 digit number equations. No numbers to write, no grouping and the mental calculation works in time with the teacher's question. Since the students are used to visualizing bead orders, they work with their fingers like they are working on an imaginary abacus, as if they are doing their own version of finger math. The Abacus Method was introduced in SISC by Teacher Peter Hsieh of Shine Wal Education Group in 2009. "Abacus is a calculating instrument used in China dating back 2000 years." He said. "Even with modern equipments around, the abacus is still a very reliable instrument that can count up to 100 million which a calculator can not do. With the Mental Abacus Method, imagine how large a number one can calculate without an aid."
The Abacus Mental Math started as an after-school program and will now be a part of the school's curriculum for Senior Prep to Grade 7. This after-school program is still ongoing and is open to non-students of the school. Recommended attendance is three times a week with only one page of work to do in class and one page homework.

The Proof is in the Testimonials of Kids

Brothers Miguel (7) and Mikhael (5 ) Alzona were hesitant to use the abacus at first because it was a new gadget. A "toy looking" device however, doesn't look intimidating and got them excited. Sometimes, they even do the computation for their Mom when taken along to the supermarket. Eight year old Peterson, seven year old Dana and 10 year old Roselyn, all students of Bangkal Elementary School in Makati, have been into abacus for 7 months now and can already do mental equations without any aid.
Southville International School and Colleges Deputy Principal Ms. Phi Anh Tatlonghari believes that Abacus Mental Math is one sure way to help their students be equipped with practical and lifetime math skills necessary to succeed.
