What’s one of the first signs that the holiday season has finally arrived in the Philippines? Christmas ads! They start poppping up as early as October on our local channels! Yes, some of them can be annoying when you’re tuned in to your choice of telenovela, but some can be surprisingly well-made and have good stories to tell. We round up what we think are some of the best that came out this 2016. (Think we missed some? Leave a comment below on your favorite Christmas ad.) 1. Selecta’s Mommy and Daddy’s Favorite
Heartwarming ads abound during Christmas, and this one by ice cream maker Selecta may be the one that hits home the most for parents with several kids and children with siblings. In just two minutes, this short film is able to draw a pretty accurate portrayal of favoritism in the family with particular focus on the feelings of the “least favorite” child. Though we think dad could have handled the situation a little better, it still touches on an issue that parents may not even notice is happening in their home.
2. Jollibee’s Regalo and Ang Regalo ni Lolo
It was hard to pick which of the Jollibee Christmas commercials we liked the most, so we’re including two on the list, and counting them as one! The first to be released is the one above titled “Regalo.” We don’t want to spoil anything, but it’s about an OFW dad and a little girl who received the best Christmas gift of all.
A few days after came “Ang Regalo ni Lolo.” This one’s about a granddad trying to look for the perfect Christmas gift for his apo. He looks through the best toys and finds that they all come with price tag he couldn’t really afford. In the end, it’s not about how much the gift cost, but how much love he put into giving. Like the above, you will need tissues for this one.
3. Nestlé’s KJ’s of Christmas series
As much as we love Christmas ads that make us cry, the cheesy and funny ones can also warm our hearts. This series provides suggestions on how to please certain members of the family on Christmas Eve, like the "Pihikang Pamangkin, " the "Kumareng Kontrabida," and the "Ninong of New York." Our favorite of the bunch though has to be the one above. It’s called “How to Impress the Mataray Mother-in-Law.” (Spoiler: she smiles at the end!)
Tang is certainly banking on nostalgia by bringing bck a Christmas ad it first aired in 2013. Points for the production budget saved, but we have to admit it’s still as eye-catching and LSS-inducing as before. Tang did a pretty good job coming up with its own lyrics to the tune of "Noche Buena(Kay Sigla ng Gabi)." What we like most about it is how easily it can make us feel all Christmas-y whenever it pops up on our TV screens. Like an instant boost of seasonal joy!
5. Pepsi’s Liter of Light
Pepsi gets a spot on the list because it’s living out the true spirit of the season. Nothing says Christmas better than giving. And if Pepsi keeps its promise, every bottle sold goes towards funding to provide solar-powered lights to communities without electricity. According to their Facebook page, they have already installed 190,000 lights in over 95,000 homes.
6. Lady’s Choice’s Sitio Naubo: A Christmas Story of Togetherness
Another food brand that aimed to give this Christmas was Lady’s Choice. Aside from bringing light to a town’s community celebration, the ad raises social awareness that many parts of the country still live in the dark, like Sitio Naubo in Dumaguete, which was featured in the video. Imagine walking into town and not seeing bright string lights, parols and decorations. Hard to imagine Christmas without lights.
7. Globe’s #CreateNewTraditions and Meaningful Connections
Here’s for all the parents who won’t be able to come home this Christmas. The ad mirrors a sad reality and one of the many difficult things about being an OFW parent. But more than that, it also sends an important message of connection, sacrifice, and love that knows no bounds. Moms and dads, your love will shine through.
