  • Mothers-in-law are a tricky business. Whether you have a great relationship with your biyenan or not, it’s always more prudent to get on their good side. And what better way to do than with heart-melting dessert! Now, biyenan-impressing dessert must meet two criteria. First, they must taste good. Second, and equally vital as the former, they should look good. Colorful and inviting, these desserts are just what you and your biyenan are looking for: 

    1. No-Bake Frozen Mango Tartlets




    If your biyenan refuses your dessert because “sweets are unhealthy,” here's your chance to finally get her to try something you made. These no-bake mango tartlets are made with good-for-you ingredients: mangoes, plain yogurt and rolled oats. High in fiber and low in sugar but delicious to the last bite, this will put a smile on her face.

    2 tablespoons almonds, chopped and toasted
    2 tablespoons rolled oats
    2 tablespoons coconut sugar
    1 1/2 tablespoons virgin coconut oil
    3/4 cup plain greek yogurt
    2 tablespoons honey
    1 1/2 cups mangoes, ripe, diced, divided

    2. Coconut Ube Ice Cream



    Imagine this: on a hot day you handout cups of ube ice cream to your kids and their cousins. Your biyenan says store-bought ube ice cream never tastes like real ube, and then the clincher -- you tell her you made the cold treat yourself with real purple yam. You’ll earn points not only with your mom-in-law but with the youngsters too! Best tita ever!

    1 cup condensed milk
    1 cup fresh milk
    ¾ cup cornstarch
    ¾ cup sugar
    2 cups corn
    Pinch of salt

    5. Banana Cream Pie



    For the ultimate biyenan-impressing dessert you’ll need to go full-on cake. For this we recommend the banana cream pie. Yes, it’s not exactly a cake but it’s just as wide in circumference, just as indulgent and also comes in triangular slices. Importantly, this recipe doesn’t need an oven. It’s got quite a long list of ingredients but there’s nothing on it you can’t easily find at your nearest grocery store. The instructions are beginner-friendly too, so get whipping!

    1 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs
    1/3 cup brown sugar
    1/3 cup butter, melted
    1/2 cup sugar
    2 tablespoons flour
    2 tablespoons cornstarch
    dash of salt
    2 cups milk
    2 egg yolks
    1 egg
    2 tablespoons butter
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    4 bananas, sliced
    1 cup whipped cream
    2 tablespoons sugar
