When the opportunity to feature young business tycoon Lance Gokongwei in this section presented itself, we did not waste any time; one doesn’t get that chance everyday after all. The President and Chief Operating Officer of JG Summit Holdings has consistently kept a low profile, and the few times he has allowed himself to be on the spotlight was to talk about the conglomerate he so ably manages.
In this rare occasion, Lance shows us his tender side and answers questions on his parenting style, his family life, and the challenges he faces as a father.
Every father has a story to tell about the time his (first) child was born. Tell us yours. My daughter Hannah was delivered at the Asian Hospital in Alabang. I was basically in a daze while my wife Jay went into an 18-hour labor. All I remember is that I asked the doctor how much pain Jay was going through, and he said to pinch myself hard, multiply that by a factor of one hundred, and that would be what Jay's contraction felt like. After Jay's long labor, I was very happy and relieved that she and Hannah were well. Jay's face was glowing when she first saw Hannah.
What challenges do you encounter being both a father and a successful businessman? I am blessed with so many things, so the challenge is to not make it too easy and too comfortable for my children.
What is your parenting style, and how is it different from your wife's? I'm the calm and relaxed one. I have to be so focused and firm at work so when I get home, I just want to relax and have fun with my kids. I give in to the kids more easily. My wife, on the other hand, is a tiger mom! (Laughs)
