  • Our country saw 43,770 cases of dengue fever in the first half of 2017, according to the Department of Health (DOH). While the number is 36.8 percent lower than last year during the same period (69,297 cases were recorded), Metro Manila saw a 24.9 percent rise in reported cases. Cases are also being reported every month of the year.

Symptoms like severe headaches, pain around the eyes, rashes, bleeding of the gums and severe abdominal pain mean hospital confinement. It can be tough financially. “For provincial hospitals, dengue hospitalization would range from P20,000 to P30,000 while Metro Manila would range from P60,000 to P90,000,” said Len C. Pozon, marketing head of Pioneer Insurance.

These are the moments when health insurance becomes useful. If you fear a long-term financial commitment, there is now a "dengue insurance" called MediCash Dengue Insurance, which can help pay your medical bills. At P350, your coverage entitles you to P10,000 in cash.

As long as a doctor confirms the dengue diagnosis, the insured will receive the cash assistance even if he doesn't get confined. The insurance will be valid for a year (afterward, you’ll have to get insured again) and can be availed even if you already have a health card or PhilHealth. Newborns can be covered as well as long as they’re at least 14 days old.

MediCash Dengue Insurance, a partnership of SM Store, BDO Insurance Brokers, and Pioneer, is available to purchase at the SM Business Service Center in SM malls (it's where bills payment, remittances, and concert ticket transactions are also conducted). Approach the counter and ask for the insurance products under Insure ME (short for Insurance Made Easy). Aside from dengue, it also offers vehicle and travel insurance like SafeTrip, which covers medical treatment, baggage loss, flight delay or cancellation, personal accident and more for up to P2.5 million for a starting rate of P599.

According to the representatives of Insure Me, the goal is to make insurance more accessible and easier to understand. There won't be pages of forms to fill up, and they will give you instructions how to claim your insurance if the insured does contract dengue.

Prevention is always better than cure. However, we also have to make sure we’re prepared for any eventuality. Insurance can provide you even a little bit of peace of mind.
