It seems highly unlikely that the fashion industry is suffering from a shortage of designers, but, why else would a huge fashion brand like J. Crew ask a 5 year-old to design clothes for them?
If it’s budding fashion designer Mayhem though, then it’s mystery solved.
Mayhem first attracted onlookers when she began recreating looks worn by stars on the red carpet using paper, gift wrap and sticky tape. Her creations can be seen on a blog called Fashion by Mayhem run by her mom Angie Keiser. She also has an Instagram account which currently has 474,000 followers. It’s amazing how much creativity this little tot has.
From paper and tape, J. Crew has now asked her to design her own collection for their childrenswear line Crewcuts.
"When we met with Mayhem for the first time we were really curious to see how she would work and were amazed to watch this barely four-year-old girl start meticulously folding the pleats on a skirt and placing stones very specifically and carefully on a top she had just fashioned around herself,” said Jenny Cooper, head of Crewcuts design.
“When it was time to design, we sat on Jenny's office floor and played pretty much like we do at home,” recalled Keiser. “Mayhem then put together her own design board, choosing colors and fabrics, and the rest of the playing and designing kept those colors in mind.”
“Everyone knew and embraced that Mayhem was a little girl who liked having fun making stuff,” Keiser says. “And when she got tired, it was totally OK that she took an impromptu nap in Jenny's office.”
Her line will be a nine-piece “whimsical” capsule collection called Little Mayhem with J. Crew consisting of everything from dresses, headbands, scarves and shoes.

“She thinks the collection is ‘really awesome’ and is excited to finally be able to wear the pieces,” Keiser says. “It's amazing to see how they turned the crafted pieces into real, wearable clothing.”
