Christmas for a cause. “Every year, we prepare something for the street children, which we give out before Christmas Eve. This is our way of spreading the blessings that we have, and I want my kids to continue this tradition,” relates Maricar De Guzman, mom to three kids.

Discover the wonder of giving. Christmas is the season for giving, and this is a valuable lesson to teach your preschooler. Sit with your tyke. Together, read books about gift-giving and sharing and how it can make another person happy especially during this special time of the year.

Unleash your child’s creativity. Christmas is also the perfect season for him to express his imagination and creativity. Ask him to design décor for your tree, then make them together. “It’s for posterity, too. You’ll be amazed to see your child’s progressing ‘art skills’ as the years pass,” says Raffy Reloza, child psychologist and chairperson of the College of Education at Miriam College.

Recognize Filipino Christmas traditions. The Misa de Gallo is another Christmas ritual that Filipinos observe. A preschooler may be ready for this, if you prepare him well. “Tell him why you’re going to mass. Give him early warnings, too, like “The Holy Mass today is going to be longer because they’re going to tell the story of the birth of Jesus,” says Reloza.
