Global Art, an internationally acclaimed art program with several learning centers in key cities across the country, recently held its 2nd National Competition at the Bahay ng Alumni, University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman. The competition, which carried the theme “One World”, showcased art pieces from more than a hundred budding young artists aged 4 to 16 years old from all over the Philippines.
At the end of the daylong on-the-spot art contest, six grand champions were named and awarded by the head of Global Art Philippines, Yenny Saw (in back row, second from right) and Global Art teacher and competition host, Agnes Lumagui (in back row, right). The winners who were divided according to age group, took home cash prizes, trophies and recognition in their respective schools. They included (from back row, left to right) Aarna Ahuja in category A for children aged 4 to 6 years old, Madeline Teh in category C for participants 10 to 16 years old, (from front row, left to right) Brianna Marie Khu in category B which includes 7 to 9 year old competitors, Jamille Bianca Aguilar in category C, Christian Luke Alarcon in category B and Maria Piedad in category A.
In a keynote address during the competition, UP-Diliman Chancellor for Dr. Sergio Cao commended Global Art for its contribution to holistic education. He emphasized that developing the right side of the brain, which is responsible for cultivating creativity and resourcefulness, is just as important as the left part of the brain, which is responsible for logical and objective thinking.
“I strongly believe that exposing our children to both arts and sciences enables them to realize their full potentials and empower them to become sensible and sensitive individuals. Art is a way of coping creatively with life. And to make experiences worthwhile, art should be in the service of life,” Cao noted.
