When Life Gives You Lemons, Make FUN Science Experiments

Lemon is great not only for cooking, but for bonding activities with your kid as well.

Kids love summertime because they can momentarily say goodbye to schoolwork. But we parents have to make sure that despite the break, our children’s minds stay sharp so they don’t waste what they’ve learned during the past school year.

What’s the best way to educate kids without making them feel like they’re in school? With a few lemons and tons of fun, of course!

Here are 4 cool science experiments young kids will definitely enjoy. They call for materials that are easily found at home so no need to stress about spending extra or scouring the stores.

lemon soda1. Easy Homemade Lemon Soda
Mix equal parts water and fresh lemon juice in a glass. Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda, sugar to your liking and watch as it becomes bubbly and fizzy.

Explanation: The bubbles are actually carbon dioxide that are made when lemon (an acid) is mixed with baking soda (a base). Thanks to the wonders of nature, you and your children get to experience a chemical reaction at work.

lemon suds2. Magical Lemon Suds
Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap in a tall plastic glass. Add freshly squeezed lemon juice, stir and watch as suds begin to magically appear.

Explanation: Just like the easy homemade lemonade soda, the acid and base components form the chemical reaction are responsible for the rising suds. Oh and you can use this to wash your hands so you don’t waste anything.

Note: Be sure to keep the fizzing glass at a distance from your kids to avoid it from hurting their eyes.
