The love of reading is a wonderful value to instill in children. Reading opens up their minds to so many learnings, and helps young children learn more about the world around them. For the Filipino parent, reading storybooks in Filipino may be just what you need to help jumpstart your child’s love for our native language.

Here, we share with you some Filipino storybooks that are recommended by fellow parents whose own children have learned to love reading.

Monica Poliquit, mom to five children with ages ranging from 8 to 2 1/2, recommends “Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang,” a series of picture books based on the original writings by Severino Reyes, retold by Christine Bellen and published by Anvil Publishing. Mommy Monica says that her preschoolers love the fact that these fairytales are “Filipinized” and are different from the usual fairytales. Her children enjoy reading the books, much like she herself did as a child.
