It’s Mine! by Leo Lionni
By Ines Bautista-Yao

If your toddler is anything like mine, you definitely need all the help you can get in teaching her how to share. This book can help you start a discussion with your little one about sharing without being too obvious about it. I don’t know about you, but when I’m trying a little too hard to teach my daughter something, she immediately shuts off—it’s as if she can sense my desperation.
It's Mine! is a story about three frogs who refuse to share. They live on one island, but each claim that the water, air, and earth is "mine!" It gets so bad that a toad who lives on the other side of the island hops over to give them a talking to. Of course, it doesn't work.
When a huge storm hits, the three frogs are forced to cling to each other as they perch on the single remaining rock that isn't submerged in water. As the flood subsides, they notice that the rock isn't a rock after all but the toad! The experience teaches them to value one another and that the beauty around them can be shared because it's not "mine" but "ours."
What also makes this fable such a great read is its beautiful language. After reading tons of children's books with simple narratives, you'll find this book a breath of fresh air as well as a wonderful way of introducing your child to how beautiful words can actually be.
