Oh Say Can You Say? By Dr. Seuss
By Ines Bautista-Yao
Growing up, I was always frustrated with Dr. Seuss’s books. I never saw their appeal because I didn’t like books that didn’t have a proper story. So when my two-year-old daughter got this book as a gift, I was a bit disappointed. Oh no, I thought, the weird books of my childhood are still around to torment me! But I am not one to ignore a book. So one night, when I was about to put my daughter to bed, I asked her if she wanted to give Oh Say Can You Say? a try.
As I read the tongue twisters that hardly made any sense to me, my daughter started cracking up. Each time I stumbled, she’d laugh and ask me to read it again. As I kept reading, I felt the challenge to perfect it. So even if my daughter didn’t ask for it (she did), I would bring the book out every night to read to her. My husband even got in on it and started teasing me about my reading. So I told him to try it and found a particularly difficult twister for him to read. All the while, my daughter loved our keen interest in her book.
I eventually started noticing that there actually were interesting stories in the tongue twisters. Hoping that my daughter would have a greater appreciation of Dr. Seuss than I did, I’d ask her what she thought was going on after I read each part to her. I’d ask her about the characters too.
This book is a whole lot of fun not just for your little ones, but for the whole family too. Get ready for lots of laughs as everyone tries to get through the tongue twisters the best way they can. Trust me, it’s not as easy as it looks!
