• What they are: A cut is an opening or breakage of the skin, a laceration is an irregular cut and a gash is a long, deep, narrow slash or cut, all often caused by accidents from running around open spaces or engaging in rough play. Puncture culprits are common items around your house.

What to do: Before inspecting your child’s cut, make sure your hands are clean to avoid infection. Wash the area clean with soap and warm water.

For bleeding cut wounds, hold the injured part up higher than the heart. You may also apply pressure on the cut by using a clean cloth or in its absence use your fingers to control the bleeding.
