The Mompreneur: Sandy Arellano, businesswoman, wife to Carlo, and mom to Ethan (age 6) and Dylan (age 4).
The Business: Sandy’s Pizza, which serves freshly-made pizza in unique, Filipino fusion flavors such as adobo with kesong puti and garlic tuyo.
What She Does: “I developed all the recipes in Sandy's Pizza. We make almost everything from scratch—dough, pizza sauces, sausages, etc. I look after the quality of our commissary kitchen every day.”
International Inspiration: “I was inspired by the large pizzerias in New York that you see in almost every corner downtown. I just incorporated the Filipino taste into our menu.”
Healthy Options: “We use wheat flour for our dough, which is higher in fiber than the white varieties. Our pizzas are less greasy compared to other brands and the dough is made fresh daily.”
Crowd Favorites:“We are known for our adobo with kesong puti pizza, garlic tuyo, and garlic chorizo! Our Buffalo wings (original American tangy chicken wings with blue cheese sauce) are also very popular.”
Loyal Fans:“I had two beautiful pregnant ladies come to Sandy's Pizza weekly up until they gave birth. They even had pizza delivered to the hospital!”
Mompreneur Advice: “Don't be afraid, even if there is no absolute guarantee—just plan your business well enough to take you to that first step. It’s a learning process; I am still learning something new every day. I always tell my friends who are mommies that starting a business is probably the best thing to do because you get to spend time with the kids when it matters most—I used to be an employee too and it seemed more difficult for me to juggle time between work and family. When I started Sandy's Pizza, I realized that the best benefit that it ever gave me was time.”
Striking a Work-Life Balance: “There isn't much to compromise in time when you are doing business. You really do get work-life balance. That is where the beauty of it all lies: You can decide when to take your breaks and how to spend your time. There are days that are extraordinarily busy but not busy enough to feel guilty about being absent from many family activities. I was very busy during the business’s first few months, but now, I have more time in my hands to spend with my growing family.”

Why She Loves Being a Mom: “There are so many reasons, but the most important thing is probably discovering the real meaning of unconditional love. The kids always give me a sense of peace.”
