Breastfeeding may very well be one of the most fulfilling experiences any mother can have. Making the choice to breastfeed exclusively is something that takes a lot of commitment and dedication in this day and age where formula feeding is the easier and more convenient choice. Here are some tips for moms-to-be to help them succeed at breastfeeding.
Tip #1 Plan to fail at Formula feeding
Make a conscious effort to make Formula feeding more difficult. Don’t buy any bottles, sterilizers or any other bottle-feeding paraphernalia. Not having the option to Formula feed readily available will be added motivation to persevere at breastfeeding.
Buy instead a good quality breast pump and the basic breastfeeding gear –a few nursing bras, breast pads and a breastfeeding wrap or apron.
Tip #2 Arm yourself with knowledge
Get in touch with a Lactation consultant. Learn about what to expect from friends and family that are breastfeeding presently or have breastfed successfully in the past. Ask questions no matter how embarrassing or inconsequential. As the saying goes, knowledge is power.
Tip #3 Make sure your family and friends are on the same page as you
Surround yourself with people that know and understand the commitment you have to breastfeeding your child. Make sure that your husband/partner and family are aware of how they can help and support you in your breastfeeding commitment.
Arm yourself with people that will support you and keep you motivated through the tough first weeks and beyond.
