    It’s that time of year when the world falls in line…..for the seemingly never ending buffets during the inevitable reunions, parties and Noche Buena that take place during Christmas.  Along with all the food items given as gifts – it’s no wonder that January traditionally sees the highest number of gym enrollees throughout the year.

    For pregnant ladies, avoiding all the yummy food during the holidays can be more challenging than for others. Most pregnant women already experience an increase in appetite during the nine months’ gestation—but around Christmas, everyone is offering food left and right and some expecting moms are even prioritized while in line for the buffet!

    So what’s a preggy mom to do so she can keep the holiday calories off? Here are some nuggets for them to… digest.

     

    EATING FOR TWO? REALLY?
    Remove this old adage from your brain especially during the holidays—just because you are pregnant, it isn’t  is not a license eat all you can. Chant it like a mantra—especially for Noche Buena—so you can steel yourself from it’s siren call to eat more. EVERYONE in your family (moms-in-law included) will be forcing you to eat more, so be prepared to refute the “eating for two” advice. It’s really eating for one and another little, little one.

     

    PLAN AHEAD & SNACK!

    As early as possible find out the exact times/dates of the Christmas functions coming your way. You can then mentally prepare for the smorgasbord that lies ahead and plan your meal for that day. This means that if there is a party at 8:00 p.m., have a healthy snack like a banana or an apple between 4:00-6:00 p.m. since dinner will be later than usual and you aren’t starving. You are less likely to be found eating everything on the buffet—flatware included—due to your hunger come party time.

     

    LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP
    Spy on the buffet table first—before grabbing a plate (or 10). This is absolutely effective—by slowing down and taking the time to check out the holiday spread—you can plan on what to eat and what to skip.

     

    PROPER PORTIONING
    Eat only the right amount of food you need. A great way to “self-enforce” this is to use smaller plates—not the full dinner size plate. This works especially if you can’t resist and really want to try everything. Go ahead and have some cake—but maybe half a slice only.

    So, go ahead and enjoy your pregnancy and your holiday food. Just remember to steel yourself from going overboard, plan ahead, spy on the buffet table, practice proper portioning and drink lots of water.
