Q: How accurate is the Billings method for conception? Would you recommend it?
A: The Billings method or ovulation method involves the woman taking note of the vaginal mucus she produces which coincides with her hormonal pattern and ovulation. It has been reported to be 99% effective with proper technique. However, with typical use the failure rates range from 3-25%. This is because some women may not be able to always recognize mucus production or its consistency. Though it may be used in women with irregular cycles, it may have a higher failure rate since she cannot predict when to look out for this mucoid discharge. I would recommend this for women who refuse to use or have contraindications to any artificial contraceptives.
