What are the pros and cons of having a ligation?
By Stephanie Hipos-Supan M.D.

Q: What are the pros and cons of having a ligation?
A: Ligation involves blocking the passage of the female’s egg through the fallopian tubes, thus preventing it from being fertilized by a sperm. It is highly effective and has a less than 1% failure rate. Ligation requires no maintainance and is more cost-effective in the long-term. It does not alter a woman’s hormone levels, does not change her menstrual cycle and sexual desire is maintained.
However, since it is a surgical operation, it may pose the risks of surgery and anesthesia. There may be temporary post-operative pain at the site of incision. It also does not protect against sexually transmitted disease.
The fact that it is permanent is an advantage as you don’t have to worry about follow-up but may be a disadvantage to those who change their minds about not wanting to get pregnant anymore.
