What causes spotting?
By Stephanie Hipos-Supan M.D.
Q: What causes spotting?

A: In menstruating women, the most common cause of spotting is pregnancy related. It may be a possible miscarriage, blighted pregnancy or implantation bleeding. For non-pregnant women, spotting may be caused by severe vaginal infections, endometrial polyps, cervical polyps, myomas/fibroids, hormonal imbalance, atrophic vaginitis (in menopausal women) or endometrial cancer. Since there are many possible causes, it is best to consult your gynecologist to identify the cause and treat it appropriately.
