OB Gyne, Dr. Stephanie Hipos-Supan sheds light on what to do if you get sick while pregnant.

pregnant womanQ: What to do if I get sick with chicken pox or measles while I am pregnant?

A: Medicines to alleviate symptoms like fever or itchiness may be given. You may be given immunoglobulins to make the infection milder but this is not usually necessary and there is really no treatment required. These may cause preterm labor or threatened abortion which may be prevented and treated by your obstetrician.

These viral infections may affect the pregnancy especially in your first trimester. There is not much that can be done to prevent any effect on the baby once you have the disease already. Your pediatrician will do tests to check the effects once the baby is born.
