Preschool readiness may not come automatically to your child. Help your child in preparing for preschool. Here, some tips to help get him ready:

  • Fine-tune motor skills. Encourage activities like tearing, scribbling, and coloring. Have fun doing these things; it will tickle your preschooler’s excitement to go to school.
  • Practice independence skills. Practice makes perfect. Let your preschooler brush his teeth or dress up on his own. Or do these tasks together.
  • Play nice. Bring your child to birthday parties and playgroups. Let him participate in games that will teach him how to get along with others, says Dr. Joselyn Eusebio, developmental pediatrician at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City. Look at summer classes as opportunities to help your child adjust in a school environment, says Ricafrente-Abella.
  • School visits Acquaint him with the place before school starts, says Rachel Ricafrente-Abella, preschool teacher at Rafoux Playschool in Pasig City. This would decrease his anxiety of being in a foreign place when the first school bell rings. Let him meet the teachers.
  • Complete his shots. Having the necessary vaccinations as recommended by the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination is important to your child’s well-being. If he is in the pink of health, he would enjoy the benefits of being in a social environment to the fullest. He’ll learn faster, too.
