How to Prevent and Treat Skin Asthma

Read up on how to prevent and treat this common summer health problem among toddlers.

Skin Asthma

What is it?

baby with skin asthma

It is a skin condition that has allergic features. It is hereditary, non-contagious, and characterized by chronic inflammation of the skin. The skin appears red, flaky, with pinpoint raised spots, can sometimes be “weepy,” watery, or wet, and can be very itchy. In worst cases, scaling and thickening of the skin is common.

What causes it?

Atopic dermatitis, a.k.a. skin asthma, is caused by reduced humidity and excessive sweating, common during summer—when the condition can become even worse. Primarily genetic, skin asthma is caused by abnormal immune responses. Atopy (from the Greek word for “out of place”) occurs when the immune system incorrectly recognizes and attacks substances that should be harmless. Dr. Malayang-Kimwell, medicine resident at East Avenue Medical Center differentiates that unlike skin allergies, which usually occur when exposed to particular allergens, skin asthma can occur with mild or even no exposure to irritants.

How can it be prevented?

Immunotherapy or allergy shots that can build the body’s tolerance to common allergens and irritants may help. But most importantly, parents should spot skin asthma skin’s natural defense against overexposure to early on to prevent it from worsening. This means taking the following cautionary measures:

  • Staying clear of possible allergens and irritants.
  • Avoiding overheating and dryness in the home. Keep the child in a cool environment.
  • Fighting skin dryness by taking frequent baths with mild soaps and applying non-irritating moisturizers.

How is it treated?

  • Cool compress and oral anti-itch medicines can help relieve symptoms.
  • Never scratch; it makes the lesions worse and may lead to a secondary infection.
  • Corticosteroids can treat inflamed skin areas, but use these minimally and only with prescription.
  • The skin can get used to these medicines, requiring a higher dosage when the condition reoccurs

Hydrocortizone cream works for my baby (P200 lang from our pedia), he's just around 3 months old when the doctor said he has skin asthma. Worst sa eye area, naglalagay kami ng hydrocortizone don altho sabi mamumuti, hindi naman namin napansin na pumuti ung paligid ng eyes niya. He has allergy din sa likod ng tuhod and arms, yun yung naputi pag nilalagyayn ng cream pero its not permanent. Suggested application of cream ay max 2 weeks lang pero since mabilis nga bumalik allergy, tuloy tuloy lang lagay ko. Kesa naman kamot ng kamot si baby, hindi ko na binibilang kung gano siya katagal bago mawala. We tried expensive creams like atopiclair, celeteque, etc. pero yung hydrocortizone cream lang talaga effective. If i have itch yun na din ginagamit ko. My son uses dove soap, lotion johnson and johnson lang. Kasi mas importante sakin Bugshield na ilagay as mosquito repellant e. Kaya naman ng hydrocortizone ang itch. Hope this helps.

My son was also diagnosed with Skin Asthma a year ago. His Mom was advised to use VCO or Petroleum Jelly. We've been using cetaphil for a week now but only slight improvement. We used a calamine ointment for his ears that was gravely affected and it worked.

my son has it...atopic dermatitis as early as 4 months old. it is so itchy. we were given an ointment which heals the wounds quickly although the skin will have discoloration. we also have to continuously moisturize his skin especially the parts were it is very itchy like the back of the knee, elbow, near the ankle and neck. we use oilatum soap, oilatum emolient, oilatum cream and aveeno skin relief lotion. now he is 2 years old and the itchiness lessened already. the doctors said, the skin asthma sometimes goes away as the child grows...hope it will be the same for him.
