We know about hospital bags for the delivery day, and new moms often receive baby arrival gift sets. But we can't remember coming across a bag recently like the one we saw on the Instagram of TV personality Karen Delos Reyes.
Her caption was so kilig, and we could understand why. This was one fancy -- and luxurious -- maternity suitcase that had a vintage look. The bag was designed to look like hat boxes that you would find in grand fashion houses in France. But the beauty lied really in the contents of the suitcase, which even had little drawers. What was in them?
We couldn't help it. We reached out to the maternity suitcase's label, Tata Rachel, and got its designer and founder, Julie Lecuyer, to tell us more.
Via email, Julie told us the maternity suitcase, which comes in three colors (blue, pink and gold), is prepacked with baby essentials you'll need for the first two months. It is divided into two compartments: the upper section or the drawers held baby accessories, and the lower part had the baby's clothes. (Julie designed the baby clothes, all made with 100-percent soft hypoallergenic cotton and followed European standards.)
A Classic Tata Rachel maternity suitcase comes with mittens and booties, hats, bodysuits, jumpsuits, baby sleepsack, bibs, and bath cape and gloves. It also comes with an authentic luggage tag and a small laundry bag.
It also comes with BPA-free Fuel Save baby bottles, which received the Baby Bottle Award in Switzerland in 2016, and Dodie soothers or pacifiers that are specially designed for premature babies and babies under two months.

The lightbulb moment for the maternity suitcase came to Julie after talking with more than 500 women from her previous work on a French TV show. She realized preggos worried a lot because they didn’t know how to prepare for their baby's arrival. "In my team, I also had three journalists who were pregnant and used to spend all their free time and coffee breaks to buy baby clothes online," she told SmartParenting.com.ph.
Julie thought it would be easier if these moms-to-be could just buy one maternity suitcase, complete with everything they need for their baby for the first two months.
As for the suitcase's design, Julie said, "I have always been a huge fan of luxury hat boxes and decided to start my sketch from these types of items, willing to keep their elegant shapes while adapting to the needs of a case that would work for today’s mothers."
The suitcase is an investment in itself. "After that time, the suitcase can be used as a jewelry box, vanity or beauty," Julie suggested. "It can even serve as your baby's time capsule where you keep baby's first clothes and accessories."
Well, it looks like the perfect baby shower gift, but it is a luxury item. Tata Rachel Essentials Maternity Suitcase starts at US$288 (around P14,600), while the Premium sets you back at US$588 (almost P30,000).
