This Children's Portrait Idea May Be Worth FramingThis local photographer wanted to do something that was not your typical studio portrait.
Here’s something we didn’t know we wanted until now: kid portraits done in fine art photography! They look more like paintings come to life, and many have a vintage feel to them.
We spotted examples of the style in photographer Stanley Ong's Facebook page. “I want them to look like artworks that you can place on the wall,” Stanley told SmartParenting.com.ph.
Stanley, by the way, has a loyal clientele for his newborn and children portraits and has shot for magazines as well. His most recent work, featuring Scarlet Snow Belo, appeared on the cover of the December 2016 issue of Good Housekeeping Philippines.
Stanley’s photos go beyond just capturing a moment in time. They venture to convey a concept, theme, or even a message while applying several photography art elements and techniques. The result? Judge for yourself below.
“My regular photo sessions with families are usually much simpler. They’re all about candid moments and getting kids to smile at the camera. You don’t need a lot of props, too,” he says.
With this series, a lot more goes into preproduction. The concept has to be fully fleshed out with research, planning, and preparation. “Everything has to be in place before I put the kids in the frame,” he adds. And all that work is worth the effort.
Aviation pioneer Amelia Earheart is the inspiration for the photos above. The model is Bella Alejandro, whose mom happens to be one of Smart Parenting's contributing writers, Michelle. Bella had a lot of fun during the shoot, Michelle reports, and there was a bonus. “When we got home that evening, she asked me to teach her about female pilots. We had fun, and we learned something too."

Stanley has been doing kids portraiture since 2007 and started his fine art portraits series in 2013. “I was looking to bring in something new to the market here in the Philippines and fine art photo portraits was something I wanted to do for a long time,” he told us. He was particularly inspired by the works of multi-awarded Australian photographer Bill Gekas who recreated famous paintings with his daughter.
A dad of two, Stanley is also a breastfeeding advocate along with his wife, Jenny. Every year he does a photo exhibit of mothers and their babies. He plans on including fine art portraits in this year’s display. Here is a look at a few that he has already done.
Stanley says he's still developing the style and will offer to take fine art portraits for parents in the future.
