Life is full of incredible mysteries. One of the most beautiful experiences is how a mother is able to carry and create life inside her and give birth to a precious baby. Photographer Monet Moutrie’s amazing talent allows her to capture this miracle through photos of newborns still attached to their life-giving umbilical cords.
“As a birth photographer, I love seeing the cord just after birth,” Moutrie told BabyCenter. “The cord is the ultimate symbol of connection. The cord connects baby to placenta, and thus to the mother. Through the cord, the baby receives everything he or she needs to grow and survive.”
It can be difficult to fathom at times how a cord holds so much life. Moutrie’s photos do an incredible job of bringing us back to that miracle and the special connection shared by every mother and child.
“Many parents don’t get a chance to see the cord until it’s already stopped pulsing and so they don’t realize how amazing it looked in the womb and right after birth. These photos give them a glimpse into the mysterious world of the womb,” added Moutrie.
This belly and cord! Our bodies are beautiful.

As a birth photographer, Moutrie, who shares her photos on the Facebook page Monet Nicole - Birthing Stories, takes photos of many magical moments.
Aside from shots of the baby’s umbilical cord and placenta, she also captures the first embrace, newborns still submerged under water during water births, mothers in labor, and many awestruck moments.
She watched her mom give birth. She saw her reach down and pull her little brother up out of the water.

We don't need to be afraid.
If you're wondering what happens to the umbilical cord and placenta after birth, hospitals usually dispose of them if there is no need to conduct tests for complicated pregnancies. Many moms now make beautiful memorabilia out of the placenta (see here).
After seeing these photos, would you consider having a birth photographer on your delivery day?
