Do you always hide your legs because of those unwanted varicose veins? While some say that it isn’t really a health issue, it shouldn’t be ignored.
Lindsey Bordone, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in the department of dermatology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City says that, “If your legs feel heavy or sore at the end of the day or with physical activity,” you should go see a doctor.
And while the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says you can’t avoid them from forming, you can still stop the ones you have from getting worse. Here are tips you should remember to prevent your veins from swelling up:
1. Avoid standing or sitting for long periods. If you’re working an 8-hour shift in an office, never forget to take a break and move your legs. Take five or ten-minute breaks and walk around the office. It will definitely help with your blood’s circulation.
2. Make it a point to exercise. It’s time to get moving if you want to stop your veins from swelling up too much. Working out can help you keep the weight off and help move blood up your legs; plus, it reduces your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, and cancer by up to 50 percent. Interestingly, it can lower your risk of early death by up to 30 percent.
According to Greg Martin, M.D., and author of the book Say Goodbye to Varicose and Spider Veins Now!, walking and toe raises can help. “Throughout the day, strengthen and exercise your calf muscles by simply raising yourself up on the balls of your feet and then lowering yourself back down.” 3. Raise your legs when sitting or sleeping. Elevating your legs can help keep your blood circulating and can even reduce the swelling in your legs. You can put a stool under your work desk so you that you could rest your legs. When you get home, you can put pillows under them or simply prop them up against a wall to take off the pressure from your legs. 4. Wear compression stockings. In some cases, doctors will advise you to wear compression stockings. These are like a pair of pantyhose that puts helpful pressure on your veins. There are three kinds: the support pantyhose that puts pressure all over instead of one area; over-the-counter gradient compression hose that gives a little more pressure, and the prescription-strength gradient compression hose which has the greatest amount of pressure.
