While all the efforts that parents pour out on their kids are difficult to quantify concretely, the British retailer Funky Pigeon came up with a tool that might help put all that labor in perspective: the “Parent Salary Calculator,” which tries to determine the amount of money that a parent should earn for each responsibility he or she does every day.
To use it, you just have to type in the name of the city you live in and the hours you spend per week doing the following parenting “jobs”: cooking, cleaning, driving, teaching, personal assistant, laundry, nurse, and psychologist. Once you have filled everything in, just click the button called “Find My #ParentSalary” and you’ll get a computation of how much you should be paid per hour for each responsibility.
To create this calculator, Funky Pigeon collected wage and salary data from the 50 states in the U.S. as well as more than 2,000 American towns and cities. For now, the calculator can only be used by parents who live in nations such as the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, but hopefully, soon, a similar tool will be made available for moms and dads in the Philippines.

Of course, no amount of money can put an adequate price on all the labor that parents do every day to give their children better lives. Still, this parent salary calculator might help achieve better equality in household labor, since it is usually moms who are expected to take on the most demanding familial responsibilities. Eventually, maybe more and more families will learn to embrace a fairer division of household work!
