  • After the Department of Health launched its synchronized polio vaccination campaign called “Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio,” yesterday, October 14, 2019, various hospitals in Metro Manila have expressed their support for the program and offered details on how children 5 years old and below can avail of the free oral polio vaccine in their institutions.

The mass vaccination aims to boost polio by giving three doses of the oral polio vaccine to all children five years and below, regardless of their immunization status. The DOH reiterates that there is no “overdose” of the polio vaccine, which is why children who have completed the required doses may still get the drops for additional protection.

The OPV will be administered by putting two drops in the child’s mouth. For children who will be getting the vaccine for the first time, a record will be made to ensure that no child will miss the two remaining doses of OPV, which will be administered in November 2019 and January 2020.

Here is a list of hospitals that offer free polio vaccination. Remember to bring your child’s baby book or vaccination records during your visit.

Apart from getting a free polio vaccine in hospitals, the DOH is also conducting door-to-door vaccination in the following cities and provinces, which are considered high-risk areas: National Capital Region (NCR), Lanao del Sur, Marawi City, Davao del Sur, and Davao City. The agency will also ensure that barangay health units and municipal health centers have enough supply of the polio vaccine.

According to guidelines released by the Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) and Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP), the primary series for polio vaccination consists of three doses of OPV and a dose of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) given with the third dose of OPV.
