  • After a successful first round of the nationwide polio vaccination campaign, the Department of Health (DOH) will start its second round of the “Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio,” today, November 25 until December 7, 2019. Free polio vaccines will be given in the whole National Capital Region (NCR) and the Mindanao region.

The DOH urges parents to have all children below 5 years old (0 to 59 months) vaccinated, whether or not they have received the polio vaccine previously. The agency reiterates that there is no “overdose” of the polio vaccine — it is safe for children to receive the vaccine even if they have already completed the required doses.

There are now eight confirmed cases of polio in the Philippines, as another case was confirmed today, November 25. According to the DOH, the eighth case is a nine-year-old girl from Basilan who had not received any vaccines for polio.

The other three cases, reported last November 20, are children ages 1, 2, and 4, who were admitted to the Cotabato Regional Medical Center as they exhibited polio symptoms including fever, cough, and weakness in legs, and facial muscles, according to a report by Rappler.

The DOH said the infant and toddler were unvaccinated with the polio vaccine, while the 4-year-old was not able to complete her doses.

According to an article by The Philippine Star, the DOH is also monitoring other possible cases of polio in Mindanao. Health Undersecretary Eric Domingo said the confirmation of new polio cases is a cause of concern for health authorities.
