Regularly monitoring your child’s development is something a parent can do, so you know if they’re getting the right nutrition to grow and remain healthy.
The first five years is a critical window in a child’s life for bone growth. During this period, kids become hyperactive, vulnerable to nasty viruses, and picky with food—all of which could undermine their development.
To help them achieve their full growth potential, you need to provide them with complete and balanced nutrition. It is important to ensure that children are getting adequate nutritional intake to help them grow and develop healthily, and as a parent, you can pay particular attention to their growth in the following areas:
Abbott Philippines medical director Dr. Jose Rodolfo Dimaano Jr., one of the speakers at the launch of PediaSure Plus OMG (Oh My Growth) Park last November 17, discussed how height is a more important measure of growth.
“60 percent of a child’s adult height is attributed to growth in the first five years of life. It’s a common misconception that height is based solely on a child’s genetics, their height also comes from good bone development with the right nutrition.”
Kids burn energy throughout the day and to sustain this active lifestyle, they need a good appetite. Weight alone is not a good indicator of adequate nutrition. Aside from providing them with a balanced diet, make sure they get enough sleep (about 10-13 hours per day for 3- to 5-year-old children) and that they develop good eating habits with meals at regular intervals. Doing so will help them maintain a healthy weight.
Kids are often exposed to germs and viruses so it’s important to strengthen their immunity to help them remain healthy and active. Immunity is also linked to growth as when children fall sick, nutrient resources get diverted to fight infection and growth is compromised. Children with poor immunity who fall sick often can be at risk of undernutrition and may not reach their growth potential. Make sure to include fruits and vegetables in their diet, and always keep their hands clean to avoid the spread of germs and diseases.
There is no magic in raising your child,” said celebrity mom Melissa Ricks, who also gave a talk at the PediaSure Plus Oh My Growth event in Festival Supermall, Alabang. “Just spend time with them, give them a healthy lifestyle, the proper nutrition—so that you can give them a better future.”
If you’re unsure about your kids’ growth track, consult with a pediatrician to check if they’re on the normal course.
