Four years from now, in 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that there will be 127 million children under five years old to be suffering from stunting if current trends continue.
Stunting is defined as “impaired growth and development” arising from “poor nutrition, repeated infection, and inadequate psychosocial stimulation.” Those health conditions remain prevalent in many countries, that's why WHO recommends efforts be made to remedy the situation.
Children are considered stunted if they are too short for their age using the WHO child growth standards median. It doesn't only mean that the child lacks the height but also he or she is amiss in overall health.
Stunting's long-term effects on individuals and societies include diminished cognitive and physical development, as well as reduced productive capacity and poor health.
How can parents help their kids achieve good growth
More than genetics, experts point out that proper nutrition particularly in the child's first 1,000 days since birth determines his or her growth and development.
As parents, you can play a more active part by continuously providing adequate nutrition to boost growth and fight infection that can limit growth of your kids. This way, they will not easily get tired and sick, thereby they stay active and healthy.
One effective way for parents to ensure that their children are getting adequate nutrition is to monitor not only the meals but also the activities. You can then guide your kids in making their own monitoring sheet.
Every day, you can remind your kids to write down all the food that they eat, what time they sleep, and what kind of physical activity that they perform. By the end of the week, you will know if your kids are on the right track and can make the necessary adjustments.
