Bookshelf Must-Have! 2 New Pinoy Children's Books to TreasureMake space on your bookshelf for these wonderful books for your kids.
Beautiful books are a treasure on bookshelves. But we will always have a special place in our hearts for books by Filipinos. If you’re looking for more children’s books to add to your collection, here are a few gems we’re loving right now:
A Lolong Time Ago: A Prehistory of the Philippines
Written by Michelline Suarez, Joonee Garcia, Divine Reyes; Illustrated by Benjor CatindigADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Philippine history is colorful and fascinating, but the way it’s often presented on textbooks and long documentaries can make it seem unappealing to kids. Enter Tahanan Book’s A Lolong Time Ago series!
The first book in the series tackles our “prehistoric lolos and lolas” -- as the book calls them -- and the world they lived in. Kids will get to read about how our islands were formed, the beginnings of our nation and other facts about our culture long ago come to life with simple text (that’s often funny!) and lively illustrations. It's definitely a must-have on every Filipino child’s bookshelf.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
A project by a team of researchers and illustrators from Halo Halo Histories, the book took three years to make to ensure its accuracy in facts and illustrations. It was launched this September at the 2016 Manila International Book Festival. Even though book one just came out, we’re already excited for book two! The series is written in English and is recommended for kids ages 12 and up.
A Lolong Time Ago: A Prehistory of the Philippines can be ordered online at tahananbooks.ph, for pick-up at their office or delivery to your home. It’s priced at P195 but is on sale from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 for P150.

BenCab Activity Book for Children: Imagine, Play, Color, Learn
By Center for Art, New Ventures and Sustainable DevelopmentADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Imagine National Artist Benedicto Cabrera introducing your child to the colorful world of art. Yes, it’s possible!
Selected great works of the artist were turned into activity pages for coloring, word search and doll-making, and collated in a children’s book that was launched this month. The masterpieces/activities highlight concepts like nationalism, environmentalism, and love for family with learning tools created by Karen Joy Desamparado-Foronda, a child developmental professional and teacher.
The book is a project by non-profit organization Center for Art, New Ventures and Sustainable Development (CANVAS) and it's more heart than profit. For every book sold, two will be given to underprivileged children. Only 3,000 copies are available to the public while 15,000 are to be donated, according to CANVAS founder and director Gigoy Alampay. So hurry before they run out!
Going out and purchasing this book can be an opportunity to teach your child about charity and empathy. And of course, you and your child get to take home a book filled with artworks by a Philippine National Artist to enjoy at home.
BenCab Activity Book for Children: Imagine, Play, Color, Learn can be purchased at CANVAS in Quezon City, at the Ben Cab Museum in Benguet and other partner galleries for P300. Find out more at canvas.ph.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
