You must remember how fun and exciting weekends were as a child. Those were carefree moments when you played all day long with your siblings. You even had mini-reunions with your grandparents, titas and titos, and cousins — all punctuated with delicious merienda and sweet treats to share.
You want the same family-only weekend for your kids, but as we continue to stay at home, having that mini-reunion may not be as simple — yet it is still doable! Set up video calls with the lolas and lolos and hold a virtual merienda together.
This weekend, try making these three delicious merienda recipes, which you enjoyed when you were young!
How to make Choco Butternut Bites
Remember how excited you were as a child when lola or tita would bring you a box of these yummy goodies as pasalubong? Now, your kids can enjoy them, too, when you make these treats at home!
The tots can even help when forming the bite-sized chocolate balls. Just make sure everyone's hands are washed properly with soap and water before and after the cooking session!
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp fine salt
- 1 pack 125ml NESTLÉ® All Purpose Cream
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 egg
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp butter, softened
For the coating
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1/4 tsp orange food coloring
For the glaze
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp evaporated milk
Procedure
- Sift all-purpose flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Mix NESTLÉ® All Purpose Cream, water, egg, oil, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Whisk until smooth.
- Grease a loaf pan and pour batter 3/4 of the way. Steam for 20 to 30 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean after inserting in the middle of the loaf. Remove from the loaf pan and set aside to cool slightly in a rack.
- Crumble the cake and form into bite-size balls while still a bit warm. Set aside.
- Make the coating:
- Melt butter in a pan.
- Add all-purpose flour and cook for 2 minutes.
- Add sugar and continue to cook for 10 minutes or until flour is cooked.
- Add food coloring one drop at a time and mix well.
- Continue adding food coloring until the desired color is achieved. - Make the glaze: Mix powdered sugar and evaporated milk.
- Coat the formed balls with the glaze. Then coat with the orange flour mixture. Let sit for 10 minutes before serving.
How to make White Champorado
Rainy days don't have to be gloomy — not when there's a big pot of warm, sweet champorado for the whole family to share!
Instead of the typical chocolate, how about making this sweet, creamy white version? The kids will also have fun helping you sprinkle chocolate powder before serving!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup glutinous rice, rinsed well
- 5 cups water
- 1 pc pandan leaf, tied (optional)
- 1 pack 125ml NESTLÉ® All Purpose Cream
- 1/2 small can condensed milk (108g)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 4 tbsp MILO® powder
Procedure
- In a pot, simmer glutinous rice in water with pandan (optional) while covered for 45 minutes. Stir occasionally.
- Stir in NESTLÉ® All Purpose Cream, condensed milk, and sugar.
- Pour into serving bowls and top with MILO® powder. Serve warm.
How to make Creamy Maja Blanca
Looking for the perfect dessert to treat your kids — and yourself! — with? Then create this creamy dish! Just imagine the glee and huge smiles on your kids' faces as you serve this to them during the weekend.
To turn this into a fun activity, request your older kids to do the mixing for you. The little ones can help with the toppings once the maja is ready for plating!
Ingredients
- 1 pack 125ml NESTLÉ® All Purpose Cream
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup condensed milk
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1/2 cup cream-style corn
- 6 tbsp cornstarch
- 2 tsp vegetable oil
- 1/2 bar cheese, grated
Procedure
- Combine NESTLÉ® All Purpose Cream, water, condensed milk, coconut milk, cream-style corn, and cornstarch in a heavy-bottom pot. Mix well with a spatula.
- Put the pot on the stove, and bring mixture to a simmer while continuously stirring, making sure nothing is sticking to the bottom and to the sides of the pot. Cook until very thick but still spreadable.
- Brush a clean container with oil. Pour maja blanca mixture and spread evenly. Sprinkle grated cheese on top and let sit for a few minutes. Serve when cool.
- Note: Other options for toppings include toasted coconut, latik, bottled jackfruit, or canned whole corn kernels.
