Caring for your pet Owning a pet is a big responsibility. It involves safety and hygiene concerns, too. And while each kind of pet entails a specific brand of care and set of rules, there are basic dos and don’ts for all breeds that you should always keep in mind.
1. Keep your pet clean and safe
This means paying regular visits to your friendly vet, getting the necessary shots, and knowing how to groom, bathe, and clean up after your pet. Walk your tot through these day-to-day routines; make sure he understands the importance of this daily regimen for the pet and the whole family.
2. Wash your hands before and after handling animals.
No matter how clean our pets are, it’s still best to be on the safe side and prevent the spread of germs in the house and among family members.
3. Food for dogs
Teach your child that animals don’t eat the same food as people do. “Remind your child that sharing your ice cream with the dog or the fish can be harmful to the animal,” stresses Katherine May Tesalona-Esguerra, M.D., pediatrician at HP Plus Diagnostics in Makati City.
