Doing household chores like cleaning the house while you are pregnant can be a real pain, not only because you are going through a lot physically but also because you are required to be much more discerning when it comes to choosing the products you use. Thankfully, there are lots of different brands now producing cleaning products that are safe for expectant moms to use. If purchasing commercial cleaners is not an option for you, there are also different kinds of homemade alternatives you can make yourself using ingredients in your kitchen!
Kitchen
Tamara Iglesias, the founder of conscious parenting company Wellynest, certified holistic health coach and yoga instructor with a Resources for Infant Educators (RIE) certification in childhood development, tells Romper that her homemade kitchen cleaner only involves two ingredients: 1/3 to ½ cup of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of water!
Iglesias notes that apple cider vinegar is an ingredient that can be very effective on a variety of surfaces, such as kitchen counters. “It’s great to clean and disinfect around the house on everything from floors (other vinegars can dull hardwood floors) to drains, bathroom tiles, kitchen surfaces, windows, glasses and mirrors and more!”

Bathroom
According to Iglesias, when it comes to cleaning your bathroom, you don’t have to purchase expensive cleaning agents. Instead, you can try homemade cleaning solutions. For example, to clean your toilet bowl, all you need to do is sprinkle some baking soda around the inside of the bowl, then pour a cup of white vinegar over it. Scrub the surface using a toilet brush, then leave it for about 20 minutes. Once that time has passed, flush the toilet and you should have a sparkling clean toilet bowl!
If you have a bathtub, there is another homemade cleaner recipe you can use. First, combine 1 5/8 cups of baking soda, ½ cup of liquid soap, and ½ cup of water. After mixing all of these well, add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar. Apply the mixture to the surface of your tub, scrub it well, then wipe it dry.

It also has no VOCs or toxic chemicals and contains anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties. Aside from glass and mirrors, this cleaner can be used on surfaces in your kitchen, bathroom, tiles, and even floors (except natural stone, granite, and marble), as well as appliances, gadgets, and even baby bottles.

Laundry
For your baby’s clothes especially when he has sensitive skin, try Tiny Buds’ Natural Laundry Powder for Babies. It does not contain harsh, irritating ingredients like sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and parabens, which are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetic and healthcare products, and which have also been found to disrupt fetal growth, according to a 2parabens014 study.

All-Purpose Cleaners
Everyone knows that cleaning is an everyday chore, and it becomes more urgent with the arrival of a new baby. To make sure you are never in lack of an effective cleaning agent, Iglesias suggests combining the following ingredients: ¼ cup of baking soda, ½ cup of apple cider vinegar, 1 cup of hot water, and 5 to 6 drops of lemon essential oil. She tells Romper that a simple mixture of water and apple cider vinegar can work, “but baking soda creates a scrubbing agent, while lemon essential oil acts as a disinfectant.”
