Janice De Belen On Her Amazing Kitchen: 'Huwag Niyo Po Isipin Na Top Of The Line Iyan'It is a kitchen of someone who is passionate about food and cooking.by FM Ganal for Pep.ph .
Janice De Belen begins the new year with a virtual tour of her kitchen on her YouTube channel.
The first thing one notices about her kitchen is the open shelving that displays all of her appliances.
The display shelves have made it easier for the actress to move into the space. She explains, “Before I moved here, naka-townhouse po kami. Medyo masikip, so hindi ko siya lahat ma-display. Finally, when I moved here, iyan ang first na specification ko.
"Gusto ko nakikita ko iyong mga gamit ko, so that puwede ako na lang ang kukuha. Hindi na ako maggigising ng mga tao, hindi na ako mag-uutos."
Janice De Belen as the cook, the baker and the collector
Janice’s first area in her vlog is the kitchen utensils, appliances, and cooking essentials. She admits she doesn’t get to use every single item often. But, as a former culinary student, she can’t resist having a bit of everything in her kitchen.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
As a baker, Janice loves her mixers and owns various of them. Among her collections, they are the ones she holds most dear in the kitchen. Janice also owns a pasta maker, an ice cream maker, a set of grillers, and steamers.CONTINUE READING BELOWRecommended Videos
Janice then takes viewers to a small outdoor nook with her big oven, which was moved outdoors because the heat it generated was too much for the house. The outdoor space also functions as a holding area for bulky items.
Then, Janice shows her walk-in pantry (we did a huge “aaahhhh”). It has two multi-level shelves from end to end, and it is filled with various pantry supplies and groceries.
Moving to another section of her kitchen, Janice shows her vast collection of dinnerware housed inside three wooden cabinets.
Keeping the kitchen organized
Janice describes how meticulous she is when cleaning this area because she takes out everything inside the cabinet to properly organize them.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
“Kailangan lahat iyan…kailangan nakikita ko para alam ko kung saan ko ilalagay. I try and do it at least once a year or bored ako kasi kailangan magbawas ng gamit.
“We get sent things, we get sent items, so siyempre you have to take out the ones na kunwari may bagsak na. Hindi mo maiiwasan iyan.
“You have to know have you have. Minsan, I have to remember what I have. It’s always important for me to review.”ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Janice had expressed to her kids her desire to downsize and live a simple life. But her kids pointed out her love for collecting doesn’t match that lifestyle.
Based on what we have seen in the video, it is hard to argue against that. Janice admits it, too, especially after she shows her vast collection of cups displayed around the kitchen.
“Marami akong tasa… Until makagawa ako ng space, saka na lang ulit ako bibili ng mga tasa ulit.
“At everything iyan, ah. Meron diyan bigay, meron diyan binili ko. Marami diyan binili ko sa Korea.
“Kasi ako talaga, napakadali kong regaluhan. Kahit ano ibigay mo sa akin, sure iyan. If it's something I can use… I will keep it.”
An open layout for the kitchen
As Janice stands in the main cooking area, she points out that all the frequently used kitchen ingredients and pantry supplies are within reach.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Her kitchen’s open layout is also a visible reminder for Janice to keep the space clean and neat.
She says, “Generally, the whole idea of this kitchen when I had this made is I wanted it to be functional. I wanted it to be something na nakikita ko lahat ng gamit ko, so hindi ako bili nang bili ng gamit.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
“Also, one of the reasons kung bakit bukas-bukas iyan ay para hindi kalimutan linisin. Para nasa isip mo lang all the time, ‘Because it is also seen, it needs to be always clean.’”
This philosophy is evident in the cooking area, too. Every kitchen essential has a place where it can be easily seen. Janice likes to keep the salt, pepper, and other seasonings close to the stove.
Other kitchen essentials, such as ladles and cooking spatulas, are within reach. It also lessens any potential mess in the kitchen, and it can be cleaned up quickly afterward.
The last main area Janice shows is the refrigerator space, which she personally cleans up periodically.
It is not about having the most expensive kitchen appliance
Janice loves to clean and reorganize her kitchen. She underlines that not all of her belongings are “top of the line.”
“It’s not a perfect kitchen. Huwag niyo po isipin na top of the line iyan. Hindi po lahat top of the line. In fact iyong oven ko, sobrang tagal na niya. Sobrang dami na niya naluto.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
“Sometimes the things that I use here, they’ve aged. Nagagamit ko sila. Minsan may sentimental value sila sa akin kaya ang hirap mag-let go.”
How can one have a good kitchen on a tight budget?
Janice says it’s all about being creative with what’s already there.
“Importante, improvise things. Move it a little, pagandahin niyo. Spruce it up…
“Pinakaimportante is it’s a clean kitchen that you actually use, where your family can actually come together to cook.”
