The previous year has been difficult for all of us and as we slowly make our way to a better normal, we can’t deny that there have been silver linings despite the challenges. From learning something new to working on DIY home projects, it’s safe to say that many of us found hobbies we can devote our energy to.
Such is the story of the Malaran family’s bahay kubo, which mom Jorenjoy Malaran-Guevarra shared in the Facebook group, Home Buddies.
“Three months po ito bago natapos. Naisipan po ng Mama at Papa ko na magpatayo ng kubo para may presko kaming bakasyunan sa Laguna until we decided na dito nalang tumira dahil nakaka-relax, tahimik, mahangin, at malilim,” Jorenjoy, who lives in the kubo with her parents, husband, and baby, tells SmartParenting.com.ph.
How to build a modern bahay kubo
To say that the bahay kubo is impressive would be an understatement. It looks exactly like the nipa huts we’ve seen in photos and books. The only difference? It’s built with more durable materials to make sure it can stand the test of time and harsh weather conditions.
“Masaya at nakaka-relax po magpagawa ng bahay kubo, lalo na kung malawak ang paligid at makakapag-tanim ng maraming puno,” Jorenjoy says.

Jorenjoy’s father, Rene, who has construction experience lead the project. Given his past work, Papa Rene was also in charge of hiring workers to help bring the home to life. The family spent around Php500,000 in total to complete the kubo.
