This Mom Turned A Messy 'Tambakan' Into A Dreamy, Montessori Playhouse For Her ToddlerShe created a special place where her son can learn, explore, and even take naps!by Cielo Anne Calzado .
Do you have a play area set up in your home? From making use of empty corners to allotting a room just for your little one – every inch of space counts, especially since kids tend to accumulate toys over time.
Recognizing the need for a place where her son, Robb, can play, learn, and explore, Mary Antonette Abella-Jayag, 34, thought of renovating the “pinsa” or storage space of their ancestral home in Bohol into a playhouse. In her blog momofeverychild.blogspot.com, Mary Antonette shared how worked on the charming transformation and what made her decide to renovate.
After giving birth, Mary Antonette and her husband, Omar, decided to move back to the ancestral home to be able to raise their child in a rural environment, away from the pollution of the city. In those days, the pinsa worked as a hangout spot where they can take naps or work.
The couple was hesitant to spend on a renovation at first but quickly changed their minds when their little one started watching TV. “I thought, I left law school to be a stay-at-home mom so I can personally look after our child and ensure he is given lots of opportunities to independently move and explore, and be raised in a loving, gentle, respectful way so why have second thoughts on spending money to keep our child off the screen? I mean, I can earn that money again but I cannot bring back our son’s childhood,” she shared in her post.
After over a month of work, the 40sqm storage area became a playhouse with an enchanting appeal. String lights adorn the antique wooden beams and tiny pieces of furniture complete the space. Truth be told, it’s #playhousegoals!ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
How to create a fun and safe playhouse for your kids

Since the playhouse is for her son, Mary Antonette made sure he’ll be comfortable during playtime. She had child-sized furniture made to make sure he can access his toys and play freely.
“In Montessori, it’s essential that toys and other materials are accessible for children so they can choose their toys and activities themselves,” she explained on her blog. The customized table and chairs come in handy during mealtimes, too. “They can sit comfortably and access the food themselves,” the mom adds.
Let’s be honest, tons of toys can easily result in clutter. To avoid having a cluttered playhouse that’s difficult to clean, always have enough storage space. In the playhouse, Mary Antonette placed a cubby shelf where toys are kept and displayed.

The reading and napping nook – completed with a mattress and wall-mounted shelves, is Mary Antonette’s favorite corner in the playhouse. “It has an outdoor view and there's a mango tree across from it where the collared kingfishers frequently hop. It's so relaxing here that the adults decided to put up not one but two hammocks,” she related in her post.
Practice safety first.
In the bathroom completed with a tiny toilet bowl, the mom decided to have a concrete flooring with big pieces of tiles to keep it from being slippery.

What better way to complement the mini furniture than with mini home essentials? Mary Antonette bought small brooms and gardening tools so that her son can use it easily.
