  • Rica Peralejo-Bonifacio admits raising two boys has its challenges. These include keeping in order the home she shares with her husband Joseph Bonifacio and their kids Philip, 8, and Manu, 1.

"Ito talaga ang totoong buhay pag may dalawang anak kang magulo," she announces as she opens her newly renovated home to SmartParenting.com.ph.

The actress-turned-digital content creator and now our editor-at-large gives a house tour in a video feature that leads up to the launch of the vlog she's hosting for us, Poprica: Popular Parenting Spiced by Rica Peralejo, on February 14, 2022 on Smart Parenting's YouTube channel.

"I think it would be very, very different if I had girls or you know," she tells us in an interview ahead of the actual house tour. "I really can't tell kasi meron naman ding mga babaeng sobrang likot. Like ako, as a kid...inis 'yung nanay ko sa akin kasi hindi niya ako mapag-skirt kasi sobra kong likot.

"So anyway, yeah, I think more than that they are boys, it is also their stage in life, they're small. So how funny that small kids or small people actually need a lot of space. Tayo kasing mga adults, di ba, parang kahit may kama lang d'yan, okay na tayo. May TV, okay na 'yan. 'Tapos lalabas na lang tayo for movement."

She adds, "But kids kasi, everywhere. it's like even for your peace of mind as a mom, I think space. Big spaces matter so they won't be like in your face. And then, also if you know, they need to throw stuff which you know, they like to do a lot. Throw stuff, run around, parang less chances of basag."

Rica goes on sharing her take in finding the balance to make their home work for both the adults and kids: "I think that there is something na hindi masyadong naiisip ng mga nanay, lalo na 'yung mga, I guess, 'yung mga highly aesthetic...

"I have a lot of friends, and especially in this generation, they are very minimalist. ‘Di ba, 'yung mga parang clean lines, soft tones, ganyan. Sabi ko, 'Ay! Ihanda mo na 'yung puso mo dahil pagdating ng bata. Talaga, sasabog ‘yung kulay sa mundo mo saka mawawala lahat ng lines mo, magiging crumpled ‘yan lahat.'

"I mean, like, there is a way naman of making it look neat pa rin. But I guess, you know, one thing that having a baby or child, or children teaches me a lot is 'yung parang letting go of your own preferences, so that other lives around you will thrive as well."

She expounds, "Actually, it begins really when you get married. Meron kang mga preferences na feeling mo, parang hindi yata bagay kung may lalaki sa bahay na nakatira na ganito, di ba? 'Tapos pag dumating ‘yung mga bata, ay! Hindi puwede 'yung masyadong makanto. Hindi pwede 'yung mga babasagin, ganyan.

"So parang over the years, I think it's a process that you go through as a person also na you know, you would have rather some things but you really cannot, if you want everyone to be happy in the house...

"Parang naging proseso sa akin as a nanay, na habang tumatagal-- and you know, I don't even know if like my preferences now are really my own lang or it's influenced by being a family woman.

"So I don't know if, like, let's say when they're all grown, I always think of that na parang when they're not in the house anymore, what would my house look like kaya, no? Parang will I still gravitate towards the same materials, the same decoration? Pag hindi ko na iniisip na merong mga batang naglalakad-lakad sa bahay na parang makabasag, ‘di ba, ay tumatakbo pala!"
