According to The Spruce, stainless steel knives contain an amount of carbon steel, which are necessary to make their blades harder and more durable. Unfortunately, this material is also why stainless steel knives are so prone to developing those unsightly rust stains and spots.

    But why do stainless steel knives get rust? Apartment Therapy says knives corrode when it is submerged in water or simply left with a bit of water on them for longer than necessary. Rusty spots don’t pose threats to our health, but they can negatively impact a stainless knife’s performance over time.

    Thankfully, if you find that any of your stainless steel knives are beginning to show any signs of corrosion, you can make use of kitchen essentials to restore them back to good condition.

    Using lemon juice to remove rust on stainless steel knives

    This citrus fruit is well-known for being useful in all sorts of household remedies, including getting rid of rust spots and stains on stainless steel knives. All you need to do is cut a lemon in half, and then rub it along the blade. Later, use a sponge or a soft cloth to scrub the blade until the spots are nowhere to be found.

    If you happen to need a little more cleaning power, Apartment Therapy advises dipping the lemon in some sea salt and scrubbing the blade again. Finish the process by washing the knife with dishwashing soap and water and drying it right away.


    Using vinegar to remove rust on stainless steel knives

    If you don’t have access to lemons, good old vinegar can also do the trick. First, take a mug or glass that’s tall enough to submerge the entire blade. Pour vinegar into the glass and leave the knife submerged for at least five minutes. Once that time passes, take out the knife and scrub it thoroughly. You will find that the stains come off as you go about cleaning.
