  • An NBI clearance is one of the mandatory identification requirements in the country and serves as a proof that an individual is not or has not been involved in any criminal case.

In the past, agencies or companies would require a separate clearance for different purposes but, in 2017, the Department of Justice, directed the NBI to make it multi-purpose.

What is an NBI clearance for?

The clearance applies for different kinds of legal purposes, covering:

    • employment locally
    • employment abroad
    • changes in legal documents such as birth or marriage certificates
    • travel abroad

How to apply for an NBI clearance?

Through the years, the accessibility and ease in applying for NBI clearance has improved greatly.

From just the main branch years ago, one can now apply at any of its branches nationwide, some of which are conveniently located inside malls.

Another change is making the process digital so filling up the forms is not only just a click away but anyone can apply wherever they are in the world.

This particularly makes it convenient for OFWs, those holding dual citizenships, and those with naturalization issues but live abroad.

Note that even if applying for an NBI clearance can be done online, there is still a need to go to a branch for the biometrics and for picking it up personally especially if you are getting one for the first time.

What does it mean if you have a "hit" when you apply for your NBI clearance?

If there's one inconvenience we can't escape in the process of application is if we end up getting a "hit" or a "match." This means you have the same name as a person with a criminal record.

If this happens to you, expect that the process of getting your NBI clearance can take a little longer.

Step-by-step guide to getting an NBI clearance online

Step 1: Prepare the following IDs

Before logging in, prepare any of the following IDs, which you will need as you fill up the information online as well as when you make a personal appearance at an NBI Clearance branch.

    The following IDs are allowed:

    • Passport
    • UMID (unified Multi-purpose ID)
    • PSA-issued birth certificate
    • PhilHealth ID
    • TIN ID
    • Driver's license
    • Voter's ID
    • PRC card
    • Old copy of NBI Clearance
    • Senior Citizen ID
    • Police clearance
    • Postal ID
    • School ID
    • Alien Certificate of Registration

Make sure that the ID you present is in good condition and is original. Photocopied IDs are not accepted for both new application and for renewal.

Step 2: Go to the NBI clearance official website and fill up a form

If you are a first-time applicant, you will have to sign in to create an account. Once you are done, choose whether you are applying for a new clearance or would like to renew.

Enter your personal information where basics such as name, address, status, etc. will be asked of you. Don't forget to save your information.

Once the all the information fields are filled, click on "Apply for the Clearance"

    Step 3: Set an appointment

This will lead you to the next step, making an appointment schedule where you will need to choose your preferred date as well as your preferred NBI branch from which to complete the rest of the application.

    Step 4: Pay the fee

The last step when you apply for an NBI clearance online is to select your preferred payment mode. You will need to shell out a total of Php155—Php130 for the clearance and Php25 for the system fee.

You can pay through the following methods:

    • Bank over the counter
    • Online Bank
    • Bayad Center Outlets
    • Bayad Center Mobile
    • ECPay
    • 7-Eleven convenience store

Once you have selected your preferred payment method, you will be given a reference number. This number comes with a barcode that you can scan or take a photo of using your phone.

Pay the fee and make sure to keep the receipt, which you will need to present to complete the last few steps to getting your clearance.

Step 5: Get your NBI clearance

You have to complete the remaining steps of getting your NBI clearance personally at the branch you selected online.

Remember to bring two valid IDs with you.

When you arrive at your branch of choice, you will be directed to the Biometric and Image Capture area.

Just present your reference number and be prepared to have your photo, fingerprint, and digital signature taken.

A staff will ask you to review all your personal details. Make sure you check the spelling of your name so you don't encounter any problems once they release your NBI clearance.

You can then proceed to the Printing Area where your NBI clearance will be printed and released.

NBI Clearance Renewal may also be done through the same NBI Clearance website. If you secured your NBI clearance before 2014, you might have to go through the same steps as getting a new one.

If you got it in 2014 and beyond, the steps are much shorter and may not even require you to have a personal appearance based on the renewal options you chose.

The quick renewal service, which you may complete on any mobile device, may be sent to you by post while the regular renewal service will require you to set a schedule and pick the clearance up from your preferred branch.
