Alex Eala barged into the country’s consciousness with a couple of smashes of her racket. 2025 is widely considered the young Filipina athlete’s breakout year. It was the year she properly introduced herself to the country—and even the world—by becoming the first Filipino woman to reach a WTA 1000 semifinal at the Miami Open.

Her journey to that semifinal made the feat even more amazing and memorable. Along the way, she defeated three former Grand Slam winners Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Iga Świątek. Beating players of that caliber would already be impressive for a seasoned athlete. For someone as young as Alex, it felt even more remarkable. Suddenly, the tennis world isn’t just watching. It was paying attention.

And Alex definitely didn’t stop there. Throughout 2025, she kept reaching new career highs and milestones. Each tournament seemed to bring another breakthrough, another moment that made Filipino fans proud.

But more than her prowess on the tennis court, we also can’t help but admire how she speaks and carries herself off it. Alex often sounds calm, thoughtful, and grounded. There’s a kind of quiet confidence in the way she answers questions, paired with a humility that makes people root for her even more.

In a post-game interview in Indian Wells, Alex began not by talking about her match, but by greeting the crowd in celebration of International Women’s Day.

“First and foremost, I want to say Happy Women’s Day, everybody,” she said. “I want to say thank you to all the incredible women who have paved the way and have advocated for themselves and for other women.”

She then went on to give a shout out for Coco Gauff, her opponent in the match before the interview, who retired due to an injury:

“Among them is Coco. So thank you, Coco, for being an amazing competitor and and amazing role model. I hope everything is well and you recover soon.”

It was a gracious moment that showed empathy and respect, even after a match. And Alex didn’t stop there. She also took a moment to greet her mother especially for the occasion, saying, “I also want to say Happy Women’s Day to my mom who is there in the stands. I want to thank her for being the amazing woman that she is and for helping me become the woman that I am. And that goes to all mothers.”

It was heartfelt, sincere, and very Filipino. Moments like these remind people that behind the rising tennis star is still a daughter who knows how much her family has done for her.

And that is just one instance of Alex capturing our hearts with her words. To honor the incredible young woman she is—and the woman who raised her—here are a few more memorable quotes from her throughout her journey.

Alex Eala’s Most Memorable Quotes

  1. When she reacted to her biggest win yet

“I don’t know what to say, I mean, complete just disbelief right now and I am on cloud nine… It’s forever in my heart.”

Alex said this right after defeating five-time Grand Slam Champion Iga Świątek at the 2025 Miami Open. IT was one of the biggest wins of her career, and her reaction reflected exactly what many people were feeling while watching it unfold.

Instead of sounding overly rehearsed or composed, she was completely honest about how surreal the moment felt. The raw emotion in her words captured the image of a young athlete living out a dream in real time. It was genuine, unfiltered, and relatable.

  1. When she talked about giving back to the country

“I would love to think that I make a difference. The only thing I can do to give back to my country is to inspire people to pick up a racket, to watch more tennis, to watch more women’s tennis.”

After her Miami Open quarterfinal win, Alex reflected on her growing impact on Philippine tennis and on Filipinos in general.

As the first Filipino to reach such heights in professional tennis, she understands that her victories carry meaning beyond herself. Yet instead of speaking about fame or pressure, she focused on inspiration.

It was the kind of perspective that shows how aware she is of the role she now plays. For many fans back home, she’s not just winning matches. She’s opening doors and sparking interest in a sport that doesn’t always get the spotlight in the country.

  1. When she faced someone she admired

“It’s super surreal to think that the circumstances have changed, I’m facing her on court. From the very beginning, I knew that I had the level to stick with her. She’s very decorated. She’s achieved a lot and is someone I’ve looked up to for a while.”

After her win over Świątek, Alex spoke candidly about what it felt like to compete against someone she once admired, while also expressing belief in her own abilities.

The moment also captured something every young athlete dreams about: going from watching your idols to standing across the net from them as equals.

  1. When she talked about inspiration and humility

“There have been so many role models in my life. Inspiration doesn’t always have to come from someone big who did it in the Philippines. For example, young kids in the Philippines, they don’t need to take inspiration from me. They can take inspiration from anyone they want. And they can take inspiration from other things, which is what I did growing up…

“I want the kids at home to see more my attitude and the grit I have on court, more than the results that I get.”

We always appreciate a humble star, especially one who has already proven her worth, Despite everything she has achieved, Alex remains quick to acknowledge the people who inspired her along the way, while also seemingly unready to admit that she’s slowly becoming an inspiration for others herself. Instead, she encourages kids to find inspiration wherever they can.

And when she talks about how she wants to be remembered, she doesn’t mention rankings or titles. She talks more about attitude and grit. That alone says a lot about the kind of athlete and person she wants to be.

  1. When she credited the people behind her journey

“My family should take credit for the foundation that they laid out before they sent me there [Rafa Nadal Academy]. But of course, the academy was able to build on that foundation in such a way that I’m able to be where I am now.”

Alex is very Filipino in the sense that she always acknowledges her family’s hard work and role in her success.

Even when discussing her training at the prestigious Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain, she makes it clear that the foundation came from home first. For many Filipino fans, that kind of gratitude feels familiar and deeply relatable.

It also shows how grounded she remains, despite spending much of her young career on the international stage.

Alex’s career is still just getting started. There will be tougher matches, bigger tournaments, and higher expectations ahead.

But if her interviews are any indication, she has already figured out something this early: how to win with humility, how to lose with grace, and represent something bigger than yourself.

And that may be one of the biggest reasons fans continue to rally behind her. Beyond the forehands and backhands, people see someone who understands the privilege of the stage she stands on.

Because sometimes, after hearing her speak, you can’t help but think the same thing.

What a girl.
