  • The journey towards building a family is not always smooth sailing. It's inevitable to come across bumps and problems along the way. As the saying goes, 'nobody is perfect,' which applies to parents as well. While they want only the best for their kids, it does not necessarily mean that they know the best practices all the time. They are humans, too, after all.

So, how can families maintain a strong bond when it is impossible to dodge problems? This is among the various "adulting" topics Heart Evangelista tried to answer in her latest Youtube vlog with her husband, Chiz Escudero.

In the over 37-minute video, couple Heart and Chiz, who are set to mark their 7th wedding anniversary this year, touched on various topics every adult would find helpful, from money to married life. Towards the end of the video, they also tackled family relationships. It began when Heart recalled the moment in the past when her parents were opposed to her relationship with Chiz.

What if your parents disapprove of your partner?

The actress asked her husband, 'How did you mend your relationship with the parental guidance?' Chiz simply answered, 'As if nothing happened.' The Sorsogon Governor gave important advice when faced with this kind of situation where there's a rift between your parents and your significant other.

"Kung ayaw man ako nung mga panahon 'yun hindi mo dapat ayaw sila. 'Yung kalaban ko hindi mo kailangan kalaban lalo na kung magulang mo.

"Because your life will be full of regret if something should happen to them."

    Dealing with 'toxic' family members

Heart then employed her husband's wisdom to give advice about handling family problems, especially when you have 'toxic' relatives, meaning 'maraming gulo, maraming away, maraming problema.'

The 52-year-old politician says that one should learn to keep a healthy amount of distance when this happens. He says, "Get away from it all and do something about it.

"Get away from the shackles. Get away from the chains. Learn a trade. Learn how to handle your own money. Learn how to live life."

He adds, "At the end of the day, your parents and siblings will always be your parents and siblings. If you're going through that [family problems], find a way to get away from it." The father of two emphasized, "Not to run away, but to get away from the situation without necessarily fighting, without necessarily arguing.

"You just simply have to stand your ground and hopefully at some point in time, their love for you will overcome whatever hurt, whatever pain, whatever disagreements they may have with how you think."

As a father himself, Chiz believes that despite all the differences and misunderstandings between a child and a parent, "hindi ako naniniwalang may magulang na hindi mahal 'yung anak nila.

"Minsan lang siguro napapariwara o naliligaw ng landas pero at the end of the day, lahat ng magulang, lahat ng tatay at nanay imposibleng hindi mahal o minahal 'yung anak nila."

Mistakes are bound to happen. Situations where we get hurt or hurt others, will arise, but as we learned from Chiz, what matters most is that the love remains and the willingness to repair the relationship.
