  • A scholar from Cebu graduated summa cum laude upon attaining his master’s degree on Comparative Local Development in Europe. Behind this success is his gratitude to his parents who both passed away last year. His father died due to a heart attack. Only seven months later, his mother passed away too.

Kent Tangcalagan said in his Facebook post,"Wherever mom and dad may be right now, I hope they look over me with pride not because of the achievements that I may have reached, but because of how I've managed to overcome whatever obstacles and surprises that life has to offer."

Kent first lost his father last February 2018. Then, a few months later after he flew secretly back home to surprise his mother and to spend his summer vacation with his family, Lydia, his mother also passed away.

"It's been a year since you've left this world, mommy. Days have been better but there are still times when I miss you a lot," he shared in his Facebook memory video.

However, despite going through possibly one of the toughest times in his life, Kent remained positive and grateful with the help and support of his family, and friends. "These wouldn't have been possible as well without all the love and support I get from my family, the people who treat me their family, my friends and to everyone I've met all over the world. My overflowing thanks goes to all of you."

Kent also leaves an encouraging and inspiring message to people who have been doubting themselves in making a step forward in achieving their dreams.

"For me, the main challenge that we must overcome is the disbelief or the lack of trust that comes from within us. If we are the ones telling ourselves 'I can't do it,' we will end up believing ourselves." He said in an interview with pep.ph.
