As remote learning becomes the new normal for students in the Philippines, parents face the challenge of providing their children with the right tools and equipment that they would need for their online classes. We’ve heard of a dad giving up his “alagang manok” in exchange for a smartphone that his three kids can use and siblings who have no choice but to share one laptop just to be able to attend class.

These struggles led to the launch of Ayuda Pang Eskwela, a private group that bridges donors with students who are in need of financial support for online schooling. It was inspired by the hashtag, #PisoParaSaLaptop, which went viral on various social media platforms and was used by struggling students to ask for help from strangers to fund their education.

The private group, founded by Diane Reyes, has strict moderators like Luigi Tan, who check membership requests and filter the donors and students to ensure that the two parties don’t get scammed. “We spread the help kasi some stories are really heartbreaking and siyempre, as a donor, mas malalapit kang tulungan ‘yung ganong bata,” he shares in an interview with Summit Video Originals. “If you just listen to the stories of these kids and parents, you would see kung gaano nila kailangan ang tulong natin.”

Ayuda Pang Eskwela was launched in August 2020 and to date, the group has already helped hundreds of students. It has inspired young learners to finish their studies so that they may be able to pay it forward. What’s more, those who receive donations are more than willing to share their resources with others once they’ve met their target amounts.

“Kunyari Php12,000 ‘yung target nila. And nag-Php12,3000 na sila, Php300 above target. They would tell us, ‘Ma’am! Sir! Na-hit ko na ‘yung target ko. Sobra na po ako, pwede ko bang ibalik ‘to sa inyo para may mas matulungan kayong ibang tao?” Lance shares.

He adds, “Itong mga taong ‘to, usually kulang sila. They’re not as privileged as other people, but in terms of the bigness of their heart to help, mas nakikita ko sa kanila ‘yun. And as moderators, as the people behind this project, it makes you want to become a better human being. It makes you want to give back more.”
