5 Simple Dating Rules When You Are A Single ParentAre you ready to get back into the dating game?by Fe Esperanza Trampe .
Love is a battlefield for singles everywhere. For single parents, it may as well be a war zone. They have already been there, after all. However, going back in the dating game is not quite the same as it was before.
Dating around is tricky for anyone at whatever age or circumstance. But here are a few pieces of advice we have gathered from solo parents:
1. Be transparent with your date.
Whether you met your date through a friend or a dating app, be upfront about having kids. You are free to choose when is best to tell your kids you’re dating, but you have to be honest with your date that you have kids.
Let’s be real. Not everyone will be willing to date a single mom or dad. That is why it is best to weed those kinds of people out. The right guy or girl will not mind dating a parent. They will even appreciate and understand you more for it.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
2. Be mindful of your time.
The fondest memories of our younger years include falling in love, dating around, and feeling like we can do anything at a moment’s notice. When you are a single parent with a child waiting for you at home, that can no longer be the case.
Take control of your narrative when you enter the world of dating. Do what you want, but remember your responsibilities. Although Cinderella had to be home by midnight, her Prince Charming always caught up with her when the time was right.
3. Do put yourself out there.
Go big, or go home. The dating game is very risky these days, and taking a chance at dating as a single parent is a complete gamble. Knowing all of this before going out, why not just go all in?
A single parent is not all that you are. Package yourself as the best version of the one-and-only you. You are a prize to be won. If things work out, a relationship with your little one is definitely a bonus.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
4. Be prepared for anything.
A lot of what-ifs are involved when it comes to dating. “What if it works out?” and “What if it doesn’t?” are just two of them. When you are a single parent, you have to be prepared for absolutely everything.
Someone may break your heart, and you will have to explain to your child why this is so. Another one may just be the person you can imagine starting a family with, but your child will have to have a say in that. Always think ten steps ahead, and be the adult your son or daughter looks up to.
5. Do have fun.
Not every guy or girl you date has to be the one. Enjoy yourself and see where it goes. There is no rush to find a man or woman to co-parent with you. You don’t even have to date specifically for that purpose. As you have proven time and time again, you are an amazing parent all by yourself.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Dating is not something you have to do, it is something you want to do. Do not take the fun out of going to see a movie or eating at a new restaurant. Put the fun in there! Who knows? Your date may just be the one who will stay for the long haul.
