Male Contraceptive Soon a RealityAccording to research, men may soon have the option of taking in or applying hormonal contraceptives.
For several decades now, the use of contraceptives has largely fallen on women’s shoulders. According to researchers based in Seattle, however, the time may soon come that even men may already have the option to use contraceptives as well. It won’t be long now before male hormonal contraceptives (MHCs), in the form of a pill, skin patch / gel, or injection will be readily available in the market.
Dr. Andrea Coviello, part of a team testing different male contraceptives at the Population Center for Research in Reproduction at the University of Washington in Seattle, says that they have found a safe and practical male contraceptive that releases testosterone over a period of three months. The contraceptive is injected under the skin in micro-capsule form made up of a thick liquid.
Male subjects who have tried the said contraceptive report no side effects, although some note that they may have gained a little weight, experienced headaches or woke up sweating in the middle of the night. Nevertheless, they attest to the effectiveness of the contraceptive, as lab results showed that their sperm count dropped to zero.
The MCH testing phase during the past five years has shown success in terms of results across all of its forms, namely the contraceptive pills, patches, implants and creams. MCHs in daily pill form are predicted to be available in the market five to seven years from now, and even earlier for implants.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOWCONTINUE READING BELOWRecommended Videos
