Last month, newlyweds Arjanmar Rebeta and Khaye Medina went viral for their drive-through reception at an isawan in front of their church. Many were amazed with the unique way that they decided to celebrate their big day, but did you know there was a special reason why they decided to push through with the intimate wedding?

It’s because Khaye, who works as a nurse, is a COVID-19 survivor. On the day she was discharged from an isolation facility, Arjanmar surprised her with a proposal.
Before she was diagnosed with the disease, she and her Arjanmar had already talked of getting married. “Dumating ‘yung point na nagbibiruan kami — what if ngayon na lang ‘yung wedding natin para konti ‘yung bisita,” Khaye recalls in an interview with Summit Videos.
ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOWBut on July 27, 2020, Khaye got her COVID-19 test results and found out she was positive for the virus. Because of this harrowing experience, the two felt it was even more important to get married — and fast.
After Arjanmar proposed, they spent around a month planning for their wedding. They even had time to hold a prenuptial shoot “around the world” — sort of. The photos were taken in a subdivision in Marikina where streets were named after different countries.
The creative juices that flowed during the wedding planning wasn’t all surprising because Arjanmar is a filmmaker. But they also faced a dilemma on whether they would push through with the wedding or not. That’s because their parents, based in the provinces, would not be able to make it to Manila.
Both were sad that their parents were not able to attend their wedding, but they knew it was for the best because they did not want to compromise their parents’ safety. Khaye’s parents were especially high-risk — her dad is 74 years old and her 59-year-old mom is diabetic. Instead, their families were able to attend their wedding virtually.
CONTINUE READING BELOWwatch nowThough their wedding was unconventional, Khaye shares that she would gladly do it all over again. Not only did she get married with the love of her life, they were also able to help the street food vendors whom they hired for their reception and whose businesses greatly suffered because of the pandemic.
“Hindi siya ‘yung typical pero never kong na-feel na incomplete,” Khaye shares. “Feeling ko kumpletong-kumpleto ‘yung wedding. Kung babalikan ko ‘yung araw na ‘yon talagang sasabihin ko sobrang ang saya-saya ko.”
And Arjanmar could not have chosen the perfect partner to spend the rest of his life with. “Sino ba naman talagang babae or bride ang papayag na ang reception ninyo lang ay tokneneng at isaw? Nagpapasalamat ako na ganoon si Khaye, na kaya niyang sabayan ‘yung mga trip ko,” he tells Summit Videos. “Ang gusto lang namin maging kakaiba na babalikan naming ‘to, masasabi naming sa mga sarili namin, kahit sa mga anak namin, alam mo kakaiba ‘yung wedding namin.”
