Bianca Gonzalez believes that “when you empower a mother, the entire family is empowered, too.” That’s why the celebrity mom is using her YouTube series Paano Ba To, as a platform to help moms navigate motherhood, from sharing budgeting tips, raising children, powering through tough days, relationship Q&As, and more.
One of her recent videos aims to help moms get started on their work from home journey. “Sobrang daming challenges these past few months and one of the best ways to keep moving forward and to continue to provide for our families is a work-from-home setup,” Bianca says in the video.
How to start working from home
She invited MK Bertulfo, CEO and Founder of Filipina Homebased Moms, an organization that aims to assist and support Filipina mothers in their freelancing journey, to share some quick tips on how to start a work from home job or online freelancing career.
Plan
Goal setting is crucial if you’re thinking of pursuing an online job. MK, who started her freelance journey in 2017, jumpstarted her career by looking up free resources online and joining different Facebook groups.
“Pagdating sa pagpa-plano, dapat alamin natin kung ano ang mga dapat nating aralin, dapat nating ihanda na mga requirements, at kung saan tayo pwedeng makakuha ng support,” she says.
Prepare
When going on an online job hunt, you need to prepare some work at home requirements: tech, docs, skills, tools, mindset, and support.
“Hindi pwede ang smartphone lamang — kailangan natin ng laptop or desktop para mas reliable ang pag-ta-trabaho natin online,” says MK, adding that you’ll also need a stable Internet connection and a webcam for interviews and meetings. Bukod diyan, kailangan ninyong magsulat ng application letter. At kapag handa na ‘yang lahat, pwede na kayo gumawa ng profile sa iba’t ibang job sites katulad ng onlinejobs.ph at Upwork,” MK adds.
She also stresses the need to identify your soft skills, experience-based skills, and technical skills. If you have little to no work experience, you can study and improve on these skills by joining free webinars at FHMoms.
Lastly, you also need to have the proper mindset. “Kapag tayo ay maghahanap ng online job ay [dapat] handa tayo hindi lang physically, but also mentally,” MK says, explaining that some newbies often don’t last in their jobs because they still need to work out some personal issues.
“Ang success ng business at client ay success din natin,” she adds. (Read more tips on how to get hired here)
Save
Some of the work-from-home moms we’ve featured before shared that before starting their online job, they first saved up for a proper laptop or desktop. Even if you’re earning a lot, it’s also important to save a portion of your salary for rainy days and other essential expenses.
Secure
If you’re currently working but planning to transition to a work from home setup, MK emphasizes that you should ensure you have an online job first before resigning. “Importante na makapag-secure kayo ng online job bago kayo mag-transition from your full-time job to online freelancing,” she says.
